Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Miguel Cardoso, voiced his frustration with the team’s ball movement even after securing a last-minute victory against AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.
The Sundowns faced a challenging second half with only ten players after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams received a red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area.
Despite this setback, they managed to find the back of the net with Iqraam Rayners’ header during stoppage time, following a perfectly executed free-kick by Teboho Mokoena.
This win marks Cardoso’s third consecutive 1-0 victory since taking over from Manqoba Mngqithi, having previously defeated Raja Casablanca and Stellenbosch FC.
“It was a tough match,” Cardoso remarked after the game. “I was not content with our pace in the first half. Our ball circulation was excessively slow.”
“We had to increase our tempo, which is why we made three substitutions at halftime to inject more energy into the game.”
“We created plenty of scoring opportunities during the match. I was confident that we had players who could make a significant impact. The introduction of Letlhaku Kutlwano, Peter Shalulile, and Thapelo Morena definitely boosted our performance. It was an intense game, and we succeeded in the final moments.”
This victory brought Sundowns to 27 points after 10 matches, placing them three points ahead of Orlando Pirates, who dominated Marumo Gallants with an 8-1 win at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.
