LEE CATTERMOLE has departed from Bristol Rovers just one week after assuming the position of first-team coach.
The 36-year-old was brought on board by the Rovers only last week, shortly before the club announced the dismissal of manager Matt Taylor merely four days later.
The former England youth international was recognized as a club signing focusing on “the development and implementation of set pieces.”
After Taylor’s departure, Cattermole was appointed as interim manager alongside Dave Horseman.
However, Cattermole left Bristol Rovers just three days ahead of his first game in charge at Exeter.
Horseman will now assume interim management of the Gas until a permanent replacement is found.
The precise reasons behind Cattermole’s exit remain ambiguous.
Nonetheless, it is believed that the former Sunderland player was not in consideration for the managerial role.
The ex-defensive midfielder concluded his football career in 2020 after spending a year in the Netherlands with Venlo.
Cattermole embarked on his coaching path in January 2022 when he rejoined his former club Middlesbrough as the lead coach for the Under-18s.
The former Wigan player departed nearly a year later and didn’t return to coaching until his appointment at Bristol Rovers.
Cattermole’s football journey began at Middlesbrough, where he joined the senior squad in 2005 following seven years in the academy.

He then moved to Wigan in 2008, where he spent a year before transferring to Sunderland.
Cattermole had a decade-long tenure with the Black Cats before retiring in the Eredivisie.
