In a challenging season both on and off the field, Kabelo Mahlasela and head coach Maduka of Royal AM have shared heartfelt Christmas wishes with the club’s loyal supporters, urging them to remain hopeful as the year draws to a close.
“I want to take this opportunity to wish our fans and supporters a Merry Christmas,” Mahlasela stated.
“They should take the time to enjoy themselves, spread joy, and stay safe with their loved ones. I’d also like to remind them to join us on the 29th of this month for our final match of the year at Harry Gwala Stadium.”
This message from the seasoned midfielder comes at a crucial juncture for the KwaZulu-Natal team, currently sitting in 14th place on the Betway Premiership table with just eight points, tied with Richards Bay, and a mere two points above the bottom-placed Magesi FC, underlining Royal AM’s ongoing challenges.
Coach John Maduka echoed Mahlasela’s words, encouraging everyone to come together and reflect during the holiday season.
“I want to extend my Christmas wishes to all the players of Royal AM, the technical staff, management, our president – Merry Christmas to all our supporters. We appreciate you. Please look after yourselves, drive safely, and return home safely. Make sure to spend quality time with your families; that’s what truly matters.”
However, this festive cheer is dimmed by a turbulent year for Royal AM. Off the field, the club’s financial troubles escalated when the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) raided the luxurious La Lucia residence of club president Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize on 21 November.
The raid was part of an investigation into alleged unpaid taxes totaling R37 million and aimed at preventing the disposal of assets that could obstruct tax recovery efforts.
During the operation, officials confiscated over 40 firearms, ammunition, and an array of high-end luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, Ferrari, Maserati, and Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Adding to the club’s troubles, Royal AM remains under a transfer ban due to an unresolved R12 million payment owed to former striker Samir Nurkovic following his contract termination.
Despite these off-field challenges, Royal AM has displayed moments of resilience on the pitch. After a disheartening eight-match run with just a single league victory, they clinched a hard-fought point against Kaizer Chiefs, a match that seemed to be in favor of the Soweto giants before halftime.
However, that fleeting hope was soon followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu FC, compelling Royal AM to seek redemption.
As they prepare to face TS Galaxy this Sunday, Royal AM is determined to end the year on a high note with a home victory. A win would not only uplift spirits but also lay the groundwork for a renewed push to avoid relegation in the latter half of the season.
On 29 December at Harry Gwala Stadium, Royal AM will aim to wrap up the year with a much-needed victory, seeking to turn the page on this chapter with a triumphant finish.
