JAMIE CARRAGHER faced backlash for being “extremely unfair” during a heated discussion about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool.
The right-back played a crucial role in his team’s notable 6-3 win against Tottenham on Sunday, helping the Reds maintain their top spot in the league as Christmas draws near.
Alexander-Arnold has been among the standout players for Arne Slot this season.
Nevertheless, there are concerns regarding his future as his contract approaches its final six months.
The defender has yet to finalize an extension with Liverpool and can begin discussions with overseas clubs starting next month.
Real Madrid is reportedly in the lead to acquire Alexander-Arnold’s services, especially since there would be no transfer fee involved.
During a segment on Sky Sports, Carragher questioned why Alexander-Arnold wouldn’t consider signing a temporary deal with Liverpool to ensure a transfer fee for the club.
This ignited a spirited exchange with fellow former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp, who labeled Carragher’s perspective as “extremely unfair” in relation to Alexander-Arnold’s situation.
Carragher initially stated: “As a local player, living in that city for a long time is significant. Trent has been part of the club for 20 years.
“It wouldn’t be right for Liverpool fans to feel like, ‘Hold on, we are achieving everything, what more do you want?’”

In response, Redknapp contended: “I think it’s negligence on Liverpool’s part to let the situation reach this point.
“If that’s the case, we must respect his decision. A young player who has dedicated everything should have the opportunity to experience a different culture if they so choose.

“In the dressing room, I would love for him to commit, but if Real is on the table, how could you turn it down?”
Carragher fired back: “If I were advising Trent, I would stress the significance of the free transfer.
“The notion of him leaving for nothing raises worries about our capacity to replace him. I would recommend he signs, incorporating a reasonable buyout clause, and if Real comes calling in 12 months…”
However, Redknapp disagreed, asserting: “You can’t ask him to sign a contract. What if he gets hurt after signing? He has the chance for a substantial deal at Real and to experience something fresh.
“I completely respect whatever choice he makes, as he has consistently given his all for Liverpool.”
Carragher wrapped up: “I am articulating the sentiments of Liverpool fans, whom I interact with daily on the streets of Liverpool.
“Regardless of our differences, it’s their feelings that are paramount.”
