
A darts player who had to withdraw from the World Darts Championship has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
Sandro Eric Sosing was forced to forfeit his opening match against Ian White at Ally Pally.
He reported experiencing numbness and muscle pain and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
Sosing is currently undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with GBS, a neurological disorder.
The PDC issued a statement, stating: “The Professional Darts Corporation can provide an update on the health of Sandro Eric Sosing, who withdrew before his first-round match against Ian White at the World Darts Championship on Friday, December 20.”
“Sosing had reported numbness and muscle discomfort while preparing for the match, and after being evaluated by on-site medical personnel, he was taken to a local hospital for further examination.”
“He has since undergone a neurological assessment and has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).”
“He remains under medical supervision in the hospital but hopes to return home soon.”
“Sandro wishes to express his gratitude to everyone who has inquired about his health for their kind messages and well wishes.”
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare condition that affects the nerves, requiring urgent treatment in a hospital environment.
The syndrome can disrupt your senses, movement, and bodily functions such as breathing and heart rhythm.
Typically, it begins with symptoms in the limbs before spreading to other parts of the body.
Symptoms usually escalate over the first 2 to 4 weeks.
Initial signs may include tingling, numbness, or a pins-and-needles sensation in the extremities, followed by muscle weakness and joint movement difficulties.
Additional symptoms may encompass:
- sharp, shooting pain (nerve pain), often experienced in the legs or back
- difficulty breathing
- facial issues, such as drooping facial muscles or trouble swallowing or speaking
- visual disturbances, such as double vision

The 41-year-old competitor from Tabontabon managed to qualify for the World Championship for the second year in a row—having lost to Lee Evans the previous year—after finishing as the runner-up at the Asian Championship.
However, he will not receive the £7,500 first-round prize money due to his inability to compete arising from his health concerns.
