Jose Riveiro, head coach of the Orlando Pirates, has indicated that coaching a national team is not currently on his agenda, despite his successful leadership of the All-Stars team to a Carling Cup victory.
He did, however, leave a hint of potential for the future by stating, “Who knows what lies ahead for me?”
Riveiro skillfully guided a squad composed of players from Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Pirates to clinch their second consecutive Carling Cup title at Orlando Stadium last Saturday. Chiefs’ Naledi Hlongwane, who netted two goals, along with Samkelo Zwane, were instrumental in dominating the first half, which ultimately led to Magesi FC parting ways with their coach, Clinton Larsen.
Given his experience in managing players from diverse clubs, Riveiro was inquired whether he envisions coaching a national team down the line.
While this may appear to be an unusual question at this moment, Riveiro has made significant strides with Pirates since taking over in June 2022, having won four trophies. However, his contract with the club is set to expire at the season’s conclusion.
“Bafana?” he responded, eliciting laughter from the gathered reporters, with some affirming and others shaking their heads in disagreement.
At present, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has a contract until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, this arrangement may change if he does not secure qualification for the event.
“You never know,” Riveiro remarked. “My full attention is on my current commitments, and trust me, I have a lot on my plate with Pirates.”
“Conventionally, national team roles have been filled by coaches with a more extensive background and longevity in this area, but this is shifting, as we witness younger coaches taking charge of top national teams globally.”
“Who knows? I love coaching, and for now, my focus is on giving my all for Orlando Pirates. Whenever I am called upon to coach in this capacity [the All-Stars], I try not to think too much about what the future might bring.”
This victory marked Riveiro’s second Carling Cup title with the select squad, having been chosen by fans to lead the team to victory over Stellenbosch last season.
