The Hollywoodbets Sharks have successfully ended their losing streak against the Blue Bulls, securing a hard-fought 20-17 triumph at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday.
Previously, the Bulls, who were finalists in last season’s competition, had a stronghold in their recent encounters, winning the last four matches against the Sharks.
The Sharks faced a challenge when Springbok captain Siya Kolisi was ruled out for the match due to a calf injury incurred on Thursday, with Nick Hatton stepping in at number eight.
Jaden Hendrikse’s kick as the final whistle blew ignited exuberant celebrations within the Sharks camp, as they maintained their unbeaten home record this season.
The victory was hard-won, with the Sharks demonstrating exceptional defensive resilience in the closing minutes to protect their three-point lead. While the play may not have been flashy in the humid Durban conditions, the Sharks displayed tenacity when it was most necessary.
A crucial turning point in the match occurred in the 53rd minute when the Sharks were awarded a penalty try, leveling the score at 17-17. Hendrikse then converted the penalty, giving the Sharks their first lead of the match.
Hendrikse played a vital role in the Sharks’ scoring, achieving a try in the 18th minute, which he also converted. Additionally, Ethan Hooker contributed another try for the Sharks.
The Bulls responded with tries from Cobus Wiese and Harold Forster, but the Sharks’ steadfast defense interrupted their momentum in the final moments. The Bulls also missed several critical penalty opportunities, hampering their chances of a comeback.
Bulls coach Jake White expressed his disappointment regarding his team’s recent performances, comparing their challenges to those faced by Manchester City in the Premier League. He stressed the need for establishing a winning approach going forward.
