Arsenal Player Ratings: Jesus Provides Arteta’s Perfect Christmas Present; Saliba Struggles in Rare Off-Day for the Gunners

GABRIEL JESUS scored his first Premier League goals since January, demonstrating his exceptional form with the potential for a hat-trick.

The Brazilian claimed the match ball after netting three times against Palace in the Carabao Cup just three days earlier.

He must now replicate that scoring ability against opponents beyond the Eagles, but if Arsenal continues to pose this kind of threat, it seems very likely.

The Gunners effectively dominated the game from corners once again, with Jesus nearly achieving a hat-trick in the first half when his header hit the post, paving the way for an easy tap-in for Kai Havertz.

Gabriel Martinelli made a noteworthy contribution to the scoreline, but Arsenal experienced disappointment with Bukayo Saka leaving the match with an injury, alongside a rare off performance from William Saliba.

Here’s how SunSport’s Martin Lipton rated the Gunners’ display at Selhurst Park.

David Raya 8

He avoided a “Fraser Forster” blunder early on by playing Thomas Partey into a tough situation but was soon beaten by Sarr’s curling effort. Raya saved Gabriel from Mateta’s shot when an equalizer appeared imminent and made critical saves from both Sarr and Mateta in the second half, always being present at crucial moments.

Jurrien Timber 6

The Dutch defender seemed a bit uncomfortable at times on the right, giving Palace too much offensive freedom. He received a yellow card for taking too long on a throw-in, but it wasn’t overly damaging in the grand scheme.

William Saliba 5

Saliba struggled in the first half, seemingly inviting the home side to attack. He allowed Sarr space that led to an equalizer, and another error was nearly punished by Reina from Mateta’s effort. Overall, it was not an authoritative showing.

Gabriel 6

With Saliba having difficulties, his central defensive partner needed to step up more than usual, but he too turned in an average performance and received a booking after 30 minutes, putting him at risk. He continued in a similar manner after the break, but fortunately, Palace’s defensive frailties lessened their goal-scoring threat.

Miles Lewis-Skelly 7

The young talent is seizing his unexpected chance to make a significant first-team impact, showing an understanding of the inverted role expected of Arsenal’s full-backs. He was the standout performer among the four defenders.

Martin Odegaard 8

When the Norwegian is in form, Arsenal thrives. At Selhurst, Odegaard was the conductor from the start, frequently dropping deep to collect the ball and keeping things simple yet effective. As captain, he showcased excellent leadership.

Thomas Partey 7

In his defensive midfield role, he quickly became vital with the pass that enabled Jesus to restore the Gunners’ lead within the first 14 minutes. He balanced his defensive duties with forward movements effectively, delivering a strong performance.

Kai Havertz 8

After being positioned in attack for much of the season, he returned to midfield, finding himself ideally situated to score after Jesus’ header rebounded off the post. The home fans raised their arms, but just five Palace defenders kept the German onside. He displayed a composed performance with the ball, although he did leave his side somewhat exposed defensively.

Bukayo Saka 7

The injury to the England winger could significantly affect Arsenal’s title ambitions. Saka was a constant threat and had assisted Jesus’ early goal with a perfectly placed cross. His potential absence could be long-term.

Gabriel Jesus 9

His midweek hat-trick against Glasner’s team awarded him only his fourth Premier League start this season, and he seized the opportunity with an early brace, plus another shot that struck the post, leading to a simple goal for Havertz. The Brazilian had waited over 10 months for a top-flight goal, scoring twice in eight minutes. With a shot hitting the woodwork and another missed chance, he surely enjoyed his outing against Palace.

Gabriel Martinelli 8

He provided the corner that led to Jesus’ second goal, switched to the right flank after Saka’s injury, and assisted Havertz’s goal before scoring himself from close range. Arteta will need consistent performances from the Brazilian in the upcoming weeks to keep their title challenge alive.

Subs:

Leandro Trossard (for Saka, 25) 6

The Belgian must rise to the occasion if Saka’s injury sidelines him for an extended period, and his low cross played a role in Arsenal’s fourth goal.

Declan Rice (for Havertz, 58) 8

The England international stabilized the match after a chaotic start to the second half, aiding Martinelli with his first touch before scoring the fifth goal.

Riccardo Calafiori (for Lewis-Skelly, 58) 6

Due to Martinelli’s goal, the match was practically decided before Calafiori had a chance to impact the game, easing his introduction.

Ethan Nwaneri (for Gabriel Jesus 86) N/A
