Bongani Zungu, the latest addition to AmaZulu, has revealed that he chose to leave Mamelodi Sundowns after last season. He mentioned feeling dissatisfied with the prestigious African club and prioritized his mental wellness.
Former coach Rulani Mokwena, however, opposed Zungu’s departure. Ironically, Mokwena later left Sundowns to accept a role at Wydad Casablanca.
During the previous season, Zungu played in 30 matches for Sundowns, which included the Nedbank Cup final loss to Orlando Pirates. In that unforgettable encounter, he was famously nutmegged by Relebohile Mofokeng, who then went on to score the crucial goal.
When asked about his decision to leave Sundowns, Zungu stated, “Yes, I recognized it was the right time to move on. I made this choice for my personal well-being and mental tranquility. It wasn’t anything overly dramatic; it was simply a personal decision.”
After the Nedbank Cup final on June 1, Zungu was without a club until he recently joined AmaZulu. He signed along with Sandile Mthethwa, a former defender from Pirates.
AmaZulu’s co-coach Vusi Vilakazi mentioned that Friday was Zungu’s first training session with the club on the field, as the previous sessions concentrated on physical conditioning. It remains uncertain whether Zungu will be ready to face his former team, Sundowns, at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.
Zungu acknowledged that his surname and the club owner, Sandile Zungu, played a role in the transfer but emphasized the importance of happiness:
“While my name assisted in this scenario, as I’ve stated, individual happiness is vital in life,” he expressed.
“In recent months, I spoke with various clubs—both in South Africa and abroad.
“I had the chance to contemplate what would bring me happiness, and when I conversed with the president and other members here at AmaZulu, the club’s vision and atmosphere were incredibly appealing to me.
“The president significantly influenced my decision to come here. I’m truly thankful for this opportunity and incredibly excited.”
