Mokwena Condemns Missile-Throwing Incident During Classico

Wydad Athletic Club’s head coach Rulani Mokwena expressed his discontent after tensions rose when ASFAR fans threw stones at his players following a 2-2 draw in the Classico on Thursday.

Mokwena’s team missed a chance to rise to second place in the league standings after leading 2-1 at halftime, thanks to goals from Oussama Zemraoui and Mohamed Rayhi, only for Youssef El Fahli to level the score in the second half.

The Red Castle was reduced to 10 players after former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Abdelmounaim Boutil was shown a red card, while Cassius Mailula provided another assist.

After the match, Mokwena voiced his frustration regarding the alarming incidents, bringing a stone to his post-match press conference. Furthermore, the 37-year-old coach took to social media to express his concerns and reaffirm his commitment to the project at Wydad.

“We extend our sincere gratitude for your unwavering support and loyalty. Your enthusiasm and dedication to the team continue to inspire us and motivate us every single day,” Mokwena stated.

“Although we comprehend the disappointment and frustration following the recent match, we share those sentiments with you. Our team displayed remarkable effort on the field despite facing numerous obstacles, and at times the results may not accurately reflect our dedication and spirit. Mistakes are an intrinsic part of the game, as they are in life, and it is through overcoming these challenges that we evolve, both as professionals and individuals.

“Every member of our team consistently demonstrates their commitment and pride in representing this prestigious football club. Despite the challenges faced, they always give their utmost effort, and for this, we are extremely proud and encourage your continued support.

“We recognize the difficulties of the past two years and the toll it has taken on all of us. Please be assured that we are working tirelessly to rebuild our team and pursue the success we all desire. Now, more than ever, unity is essential—for both players and fans.

“Your unwavering support, affection, and encouragement are the driving forces that help us conquer adversity and come back stronger together. Let us stay focused on the common goal of elevating our club to new heights.

“Thank you for being the most remarkable fans in the world. Your passion and loyalty do not go unnoticed. Together, let us show our unity behind all our players and continue to demonstrate to the world the true essence of solidarity and support—something that only true champions can embody. With heartfelt gratitude and love, let the Wydad spirit shine brightly,” he concluded.
