Peter Wright Reflects on Emotional Breakdown at World Darts Championship Triggered by Special Moment with Daughter

PETER Wright admitted that he “lost his cool” when a specific song played during a break in his match against Wesley Plaisier on Tuesday night.

Wright, who has slipped to No.17 in the world rankings this year, achieved a tough 3-1 victory over Plaisier, advancing to the third round at Ally Pally.

Wright, 54, shared: “I’ve really missed all of you; I’ve truly missed these interviews after a win. I was in control of the match and then suddenly lost my focus.

“It was due to the guys playing music during the break; they played Angels by Robbie Williams, a song I absolutely adore.

“For the first time, I could hear my daughter singing it in my mind, and that completely threw me off.

“However, I managed to push through, and that’s what counts.”

It’s unclear which daughter Wright was referring to, as he has two daughters, Naomi and Jessie, with his wife Joanne, in addition to their son Tristan.

Snakebite previously shared that Jessie, 30, inspired his signature mohawk hairstyle.

Wright also expressed his appreciation for the crowd for “standing by him throughout the match” against the 34-year-old Dutchman Plaisier.

Wright is set to face in-form Jermaine Wattimena next, who recently eliminated James Wade, in the third round after Christmas.

He commented: “I hope that class remains steady, although form may vary.

“I wish for Wattimena’s form to dip back to average after Christmas, so I can take him down.”

“However, it’s fantastic to see Jermaine performing so well; I genuinely applaud him. I must significantly improve my game to keep up with his level.”

Wright also issued a firm statement about retirement, expressing his goal to defeat teen sensation Luke Littler.

When asked whether he ever doubted his ability to turn his results around, Wright replied: “No. People say I should retire and move to the seniors’ circuit.

“I’m not ready for that yet. I’m here to compete with Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.”

Regarding his objectives for the tournament, Wright stated: “Of course, I want to win it. My form might not be at its peak, but I believe I can achieve victory.”

Humphries and darts sensation Littler are among the frontrunners to clinch the title at Ally Pally.

Wright concluded: “What fuels my ambition? Luke Humphries and Luke Littler are my driving forces.

“I know I can still compete with them; what I’m accomplishing in practice assures me that I can not only compete but surpass them.”
