Renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane has provided important updates about his future with Esteghlal FC amid rumors linking him to major African clubs such as Moroccan champions Raja Club Athletic and Egyptian giants Zamalek.
The three-time CAF Champions League winner took charge of The Capital Blues in October under a temporary contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season, as he aims to help the Iranian team regain their competitive edge.
After a tough start that included three straight losses, Mosimane’s team is now enjoying a six-match unbeaten run across all competitions, although their league winning streak was disrupted by a goalless draw against Gol Gohar on Monday.
Now, the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns head coach has elaborated on his future plans, as his project with the Persian Gulf Pro League club gains vital momentum following a shaky opening to the 2024/25 season.
“I’m pleased you asked about the contract because [the day before the Gohar match] I made a mistake. Someone inquired if there were talks about a new contract, and I responded that no one had approached me,” Mosimane noted.
“I made an error; while I did communicate with the president, we didn’t discuss any details about the contract. He simply mentioned that he hopes to extend it and asked for my transparency. We will see; I’m here and I would like to stay.
“If a contract is offered, I believe we can discuss it. Right now, it’s not on the agenda, so as soon as it is, I won’t hesitate to decide, but my goal is to stay. I want to make a positive impact on this team; they have the capability to improve—they deserve that,” he added.
Mosimane also praised his players highly and conveyed his satisfaction with living in the Middle East, despite concerns about the ongoing conflict with Israel that might impact living conditions in Iran.
“You can see they’re playing well and moving the ball effectively; it’s a different situation from when I first arrived. They are energetic, ambitious to win, and fiercely competitive. I’m unconcerned about other countries; I have no issues being in Iran,” affirmed the 60-year-old coach.
“We encounter no problems with social or lifestyle aspects; my main focus is football. If the football is thriving [then everything else is well], I’m all about football. People were saying that Iran isn’t secure, that it’s not suitable, and so forth. I’m comfortable here; I relish my time in Iran. No problems,” he stated.
Currently, Esteghlal is in eighth place in the league standings with 15 points, trailing leaders Tractor by 13 points, as they gear up for their next match against Aluminium Arak at Imam Khomeini Stadium on Friday afternoon.
