Mayo Sparkles as Belouizdad Achieves Commanding Victory

South African striker Khanyisa Mayo has kept his scoring momentum alive, netting a goal for the second consecutive league match and helping CR Belouizdad secure a convincing 3-0 victory over JS Saoura on Tuesday evening as they resumed their Ligue 1 campaign.

Abderrahmane Bentahar set the tone for the Chababists, scoring early in the second half, followed by Aymen Mahious who extended the lead in the 52nd minute. Mayo then completed the scoring just five minutes later, ensuring all points remained in Algiers.

Having joined Belouizdad during the off-season, Mayo seems to be adapting well in North Africa under the guidance of newly appointed coach Abdelkader Amrani, achieving consecutive starting roles for the first time since October.

The 26-year-old forward has proven his worth by scoring when it counts, having registered his inaugural goal in Ligue 1 during a 2-0 win against ASO Chlef earlier this month.

In total, Mayo has tallied three goals in 12 appearances across all competitions, including a consolation goal against fellow countrymen Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League back in November. With this recent victory, Belouizdad has moved up from the relegation zone to seventh place, collecting 16 points with four wins, four draws, and two losses after 10 matches.

The Algiers-based team finds itself five points behind league leaders JS Kabylie, with two games in hand, despite a challenging start to the 2024/25 season that resulted in the departure of French coach Corentin Martin, who had been brought on board just in July 2024.

Amrani’s side is currently enjoying a four-match winning streak in the league and is focusing on an important upcoming match in the CAF Champions League against defending champions Al Ahly on Sunday, December 22.

Desperate for a win in Cairo, the Algerian giants recognize that a victory could substantially bolster their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals by surpassing Jose Riveiro’s team in Group C standings with a crucial win against the Red Devils.
