Cardoso: We’re Lucky to Have Williams

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has voiced his gratitude for having a goalkeeper like Ronwen Williams, who plays a key role in the team’s goal-scoring opportunities.

This admiration followed Williams’ quick recognition of Kutlwano Letlhaku on the wing, which led to Letlhaku cutting in and assisting Iqraam Rayners in netting the lone goal of the match, ensuring the Brazilians achieved a 1-0 triumph over Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League on Sunday, marking coach Miguel Cardoso’s debut game.

“Having a goalkeeper of this quality is essential,” Cardoso commented.

“When we build our play, the involvement of the goalkeeper, full-backs, and midfielders creates countless opportunities.”

“The ability to oversee the entire field from goal is crucial, and Ronwen has shown he can do that effectively.”

“This enables us to consider various tactics. If our rivals apply high pressure, the spaces available for the goalkeeper might be limited.”

Following that second assist, Williams made his way to Morocco to receive two honors: CAF Inter-Club Player of the Year and CAF Goalkeeper of the Year during the CAF 2024 Awards.

Despite the victory, the Portuguese manager noted that his team still has significant improvement to achieve to meet their aspirations.

“I think we are not yet at the level we aim for because we should enhance our ball control and space-finding abilities,” reflected the former Espérance Sportive de Tunis coach.

“Nevertheless, the commitment we displayed is something that can be further amplified through victories. It was vital to build upon that energy and drive.”

“I believe it’s time for us to have faith in one another, which we already have. So, let’s keep putting in the effort, prepare for the next match, analyze it, and showcase our skills.”

“Our squad is extensive, filled with motivated players, as shown by those on the bench celebrating. Even players not in the matchday squad, along with the injured ones, joined in the festivities, which delights me.”

Sundowns will aim to extend their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership table over Orlando Pirates at DHL Stadium on Wednesday (19:30).
