CHRIS KAMARA is preparing for his commentary return on Boxing Day after overcoming health issues.
The 66-year-old ex-midfielder for Swindon and Brentford left his role at Sky Sports in 2022 due to an underactive thyroid diagnosis in the previous year.
He faced challenges with speech apraxia, which had a significant impact on his mental health, leading him to consider suicide.
Kammy has officially announced his return to pitchside for Prime Video on December 26, where he will join his former Sky associate Jeff Stelling.
The beloved TV personality will be covering the Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham at City Ground.
He shared on X: “Best phone call ever this afternoon inviting me to cover the Forest vs Spurs match on Boxing Day – reporting back to the Unbelievable @JeffStelling in the studio.
“I thought it was all over for me, so immense thanks to Amazon – I’m back.”
Chris was a presenter and football analyst at Sky Sports from 1992 until his departure in 2022 due to health issues.
His speech is gradually improving, thanks to treatments in Mexico.
While he hasn’t fully recuperated, he is on the road to recovery.
Kamara mentioned during a summer interview: “I’ve visited Mexico twice already. I aim to return for a third session.
“My speech has gotten better. The only thing I’m missing is my former rapid pace; I used to talk at lightning speed, and I’d love to get that back.
‘My life was over two years ago,’ Chris Kamara says as he fights back tears on Britain Get Singing
“So, I’m going back for additional treatment.”
What is apraxia of speech?
CHRIS Kamara has been diagnosed with apraxia of speech – but what is it?
Apraxia of speech is a condition that interferes with verbal communication, where individuals know what they want to say but struggle to articulate the words.
The NHS indicates that this condition can be exceptionally frustrating for affected individuals.
They note: “Typically, someone with apraxia will find conversational speech challenging; however, they may perform well in ‘automatic’ speech tasks, like counting, swearing, reciting rhymes, and saying greetings or farewells.
This condition is usually a consequence of damage to the left side of the brain, often due to a stroke.
Importantly, this disorder doesn’t affect a person’s understanding, and symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition.
