PRESENTER Isa Guha issued a live apology after inadvertently describing an Indian cricketer as a “primate.”
The BBC commentator was covering the third test match between Australia and India for Fox Sports when her comments unexpectedly stirred controversy.
Bowler Jasprit Bumrah achieved five wickets on the second day, and Guha attempted to praise his extraordinary performance by claiming it transcended human capability.
Nevertheless, her choice of words led to criticism as she stated: “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah.”
The following day on live television, Guha, who is of Indian heritage with roots from West Bengal, extended her apologies.
She expressed: “Yesterday during commentary, I used a term that could be interpreted in various ways.
“First and foremost, I sincerely apologize for any offense that may have occurred.
“I hold myself to exceptionally high standards regarding empathy and respect for others.
“If you analyze the entire transcript, my intention was only to offer the highest praise for one of India‘s top players, whom I highly esteem.
“I advocate for equality and have devoted my career to promoting inclusion and understanding within the sport.
“My aim was to express the magnitude of his achievements, but I chose the wrong word. For that, I am truly sorry.
“As someone of South Asian heritage, I hope people understand that there was no malicious intention.

“I hope this incident hasn’t overshadowed what has been a remarkable Test match up to this point, and I look forward to its continuation.
“Once again, I am genuinely sorry.”
Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri praised Guha for her reaction, stating: “First of all, she’s a courageous individual. To do that on live television and apologize requires a lot of bravery.
“You heard it straight from her, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s settled. We’re all human and capable of mistakes.
“To recognize, admit, and say ‘I’m sorry’ when something goes awry demands strength. She has done that; let’s move forward.”
Aussie great Adam Gilchrist echoed Shastri’s thoughts, adding: “We all appreciate your professionalism, integrity, and sincere compassion for everyone you engage with.
“Well done; you have our unwavering support.”
