Wolves Release Brief 116-Word Statement After Parting Ways with Gary O’Neil Following Tumultuous Loss to Ipswich

O’Neil, 41, has joined the ranks of Erik ten Hag and Steve Cooper in searching for new employment following the West Midlands club’s underwhelming start to the season.

Wolves decided to part ways with O’Neil after their 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town at Molineux Stadium on Saturday.

The club communicated this outcome through a brief statement of only 116 words.

It read: “Wolves have parted ways with head coach Gary O’Neil and his coaching staff.

“O’Neil joined Molineux just three days before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, facing a considerable challenge and managing to lead the Old Gold through a successful term.

“In his first season, Wolves achieved a notable victory over Manchester City and celebrated impressive wins at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as competing against rivals West Bromwich Albion on their journey to the FA Cup quarter-finals.”

The statement included gratitude from the club chairman, Jeff Shi.

He stated: “We are extremely grateful to Gary for his commitment, effort, and hard work during his time at the club and wish him and his team all the best for the future.”

O’Neil had received a temporary reprieve after the 2-1 loss to West Ham on December 9.

There were speculations that either he or Julen Lopetegui could be dismissed following that match, given West Ham’s own troubles as well.

A massive brawl broke out after West Ham defeated Wolves, with Bowen being thrown to the ground as tensions escalated following ‘El Sackico.’

Following the defeat to Ipswich, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was spotted in the stands.

The former Manchester United and Cardiff City manager is reportedly among the top contenders to replace O’Neil.

He likely found the behavior of Wolves’ players at the end of the match disheartening.

Players such as Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri were involved in a scuffle with Ipswich.

Cunha might face sanctions from the FA after allegedly striking a security guard.

Meanwhile, Ait-Nouri had to be restrained by defender Craig Dawson.

This altercation occurred just a day after Mario Lemina lost his position as captain following a confrontation with Jarrod Bowen in their previous match.

Wolves now face a challenging series of matches as they head into the new year.

Their next fixture is a crucial away encounter against Leicester City, followed by games against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest.

After that, Wolves will travel to Bristol City in the FA Cup.
