Ronwen Williams, the goalkeeper representing Mamelodi Sundowns, has been selected as one of the top three contenders for the CAF Player of the Year Based in Africa award. The full list of finalists will be announced on Soccer Africa this Thursday.
Williams has had an exceptional year, garnering nominations for the CAF Player of the Year, CAF Interclub Player of the Year, and CAF Goalkeeper of the Year awards. His impressive performances with Sundowns and Bafana Bafana have earned him global recognition.
He played a pivotal role in Sundowns’ significant victories in the African Football League and the Betway Premiership, setting a new points record under head coach Rulani Mokwena. Furthermore, Williams was awarded the PSL Footballer of the Year, making him one of only three goalkeepers to achieve this honor.
While representing Bafana Bafana, Williams was crucial in the team’s achievement of a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, which marks their first podium finish in 24 years. He was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the tournament and earned a spot on the Team of the Tournament.
His extraordinary performances also earned him a nomination for the Yachine Trophy, given to the world’s best goalkeeper. Although he was ultimately edged out by Emiliano Martinez, he was included in the FIFA FIFPro World XI alongside football icons like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Rodri, and Vinicius Jr.
