Stellenbosch defender, Ismail Toure, remains uncertain about his future with the team.
Toure has acknowledged that he has one year remaining on his contract with Stellies, which is set to conclude at the end of the 2026 season.
The 26-year-old has been linked with moves to both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates during the off-season. However, due to restrictions on foreign player quotas at both clubs, a transfer did not take place.
The failed transfer attempts seemed to affect Toure’s mindset, as he was initially left out of the squad, including for the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round match against Nsingizini Hotspurs at the start of this season. Coach Steve Barker indicated that Toure’s desire to play in Europe was the reason for his exclusion.
Stellenbosch CEO, Rob Benadie, also acknowledged Toure’s ambition to play overseas, confirming that a transfer to either Chiefs or Pirates was unlikely.
When asked about his future, Toure told Sportswire, “I have one more year left on my contract with Stellenbosch.”
His limited English proficiency made it difficult to provide clear answers.
When inquired about his long-term ambitions, including the possibility of transferring to one of the “Big Three” clubs, Toure expressed his loyalty to Stellenbosch while also sharing his desire to play in Europe.
Regarding specific interest from Kaizer Chiefs, Toure simply stated, “I have one more year with Stellenbosch.”
Since joining Stellies from Marumo Gallants at the start of last season, Toure has made 85 appearances, scoring two goals and assisting once. His goal in the Carling Knockout Cup final against TS Galaxy was crucial in securing the club’s historic trophy victory.
