Miguel Cardoso, the new head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, has clarified his reasoning behind retaining Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene within the club’s coaching staff.
Recently, the Brazilians bid farewell to Manqoba Mngqithi along with two of his coaching staff, Romain Folz and Wendell Robinson. Both senior coach Komphela and Mweene have been included in Sundowns’ revamped technical team.

Cardoso, the Portuguese coach, emphasized that keeping Komphela and Mweene was vital for his adjustment to the club. “I am pleased with my technical team; our decision to keep Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene was a mutual one, as I need to absorb their insights quickly, not only because of their expertise but also due to their contributions to our team’s caliber,” remarked Cardoso.
“Their extensive experience is priceless, and as locals, they offer perspectives that are crucial for us. These elements were significant in our decision to retain them, which was a cooperative choice rather than an imposed one. If it were otherwise, I wouldn’t be sharing this with you,” he added.
“I opted to keep them as I believe it will be essential, and I am also eager to work closely with the whole physical performance department along with Mathias [Zangenberg] and Sandiso, who are already part of the framework.”
Komphela will continue in his position as senior coach, while Mweene, who holds the record for the most caps with the Zambian national team at over 120 appearances, will assume the newly created role of goalkeeper coach for the Brazilians.
The former Free State Stars goalkeeper previously held the role of assistant goalkeeper coach, whereas the recently released Robinson served as the main goalkeeper coach for the team.
