Reports indicate that Mamelodi Sundowns are poised to announce a new head coach, according to TimesLive.
The report suggests that the incoming coach, who will take over from current head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, originates from Europe. A press conference has been arranged for Tuesday.
Mngqithi, who has been part of the Sundowns technical team for over a decade, is expected to resign from his head coaching position. The specifics of his future within the first team remain uncertain.
Since he assumed the role from Rulani Mokwena during the off-season, Sundowns have not shown the same dominance they had under Mokwena’s leadership. Mokwena’s enthralling, attacking style established Sundowns as serious contenders, particularly in North Africa, culminating in their success in the African Football League last year against elite African clubs.
Despite Sundowns currently leading the Betway Premiership, their recent displays have been somewhat deceptive. A disappointing loss to Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup final further highlighted a decline in their performance. The team’s gameplay has lacked the dynamism and creativity that were hallmarks of the Mokwena era.
This would not be the first time Mngqithi has been relieved of his head coaching responsibilities. In October 2022, he was replaced by Mokwena following a heavy defeat to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 second-leg semi-final. At that point, both Mngqithi and Mokwena were acting as co-coaches. Mokwena later left Sundowns to join Wydad Casablanca at the conclusion of the previous season.
