Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has issued a bold statement to Moroccan giants Raja Club Athletic ahead of their CAF Champions League matchup.
The Tshwane side recently earned a 1-1 draw in their Champions League group stage fixture against AS FAR in Morocco on Saturday.
Former Stellenbosch striker Iqraam Rayners scored the sole goal for the Brazilians. Mngqithi’s squad is currently in second place with two points from two matches, while the leaders, AS FAR, hold four points.
The Brazilians are gearing up to face fellow Moroccan powerhouses Raja on matchday 3 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this Sunday. Mngqithi warns Raja to prepare for a tough battle, stressing that his team is a formidable opponent on home soil.
“It’s another game that we must consider very carefully,” Mngqithi noted.
“However, I can assure you that any opponent coming here will find it challenging. At this point, we need to concentrate on securing wins, and I believe we’ve set ourselves up quite nicely.
“Moreover, the draw between Raja and AS Maniema Union has played to our advantage in the group. While we would have preferred to win against AS FAR, in football, we must accept whatever results come our way.
“I’m very happy with my players’ performances and expect an even greater showing at home.”
In related news, the former Golden Arrows coach expressed confidence that they will prevail over AS FAR in South Africa during the second round if they maintain their current form.
“It will be a different story; that’s a commitment I can make,” Mngqithi stated.
“If we can replicate our performance against AS FAR in their own venue with all their fans creating a vibrant atmosphere, I believe we will emerge victorious.”
This upcoming match is slated for January 2025 and will serve as the final group stage game for both teams. Before this, the Brazilians will travel to DR Congo to face AS Maniema Union.
