Millwall fans are calling on Jose Mourinho to stay true to his word after he jokingly suggested he would consider managing at The Den.
The Lions are actively searching for a new manager after Neil Harris’s recent resignation—his second exit from the club, the first being in 2019.
Harris is set to end his second stint, which lasted 10 months, after Saturday’s game against Middlesbrough, and will also manage Millwall on Wednesday against Sheffield United.
Mourinho suggested in October that he would be excited about a return to English football following his managerial spells with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
The Special One mentioned Millwall as a surprising option, given its proximity to his London home.
When pressed about managing teams in relegation battles, the Fenerbahce coach responded: “Millwall. Millwall. I just cross the bridge from my house! Millwall.”
Millwall supporters have taken to social media, reiterating the former Real Madrid manager’s comments and urging him to take this opportunity and fulfill his commitment.
One fan tweeted: “Jose, we await your arrival.”
Another added: “Guess it’s time to see if Mourinho was serious after all.”
A third fan remarked: “Mourinho called it out. He’ll need to step up now or look foolish.”
This fan commented: “Jose Mourinho, a man can dream.”
Another noted: “Jose Mourinho is taking over from Neil Harris at Millwall… You heard it here first.”
Jose Mourinho wildly drags his own Fenerbahce assistant by his hood and shoves him away during bizarre goal celebration
However, Mourinho clarified that his comments were made in jest, confirming he does not intend to manage teams fighting relegation.
Currently, Millwall occupies the 11th position in the Championship table, placing them in a relatively safe spot, despite facing relegation threats last season.
Mourinho stated: “I’m never going to a team fighting relegation. It’s too challenging.
“It’s tougher than competing for titles. The emotional toll is significant because it changes lives.
“I admire the courageous individuals who take on that challenge. I’ve had three clubs in England across four different tenures, and I love it.
“My family resides in London; it’s home. One day, I aspire to return unless I am not wanted.
“However, to clarify, for the next two years, no one will be removing me from Fenerbahce.”
