Factors Leading to the Dismissal of Manqoba and Folz by Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced that the recent “unsatisfactory” performance has led to a restructuring of the club’s coaching staff.

The club made headlines in the football world by appointing former Esperance coach Miguel Cardoso to succeed Manqoba Mngqithi. Additionally, assistant coach Wendell Robinson and newly hired coach Romain Folz have also left the team.

According to Sundowns, “The establishment of the new Coaching Technical Team was initiated by the unsatisfactory recent results, despite the Board’s commitment to allow Manqoba Mngqithi and his Technical Team the chance to guide the Club into the future.”

“Coach Miguel previously held the position of Head Coach at Espérance Sportive de Tunis, leading them to the finals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League. He is joined at Sundowns by three of his assistants: Fabio Fernandes, Pedro Azevedo, and João Araújo.

“Coach Miguel boasts an extensive coaching career across Portugal, Spain, France, Greece, and Ukraine, having worked with renowned clubs such as Porto, Braga, Deportivo La Coruna, Celta Vigo, AEK Athens, Nantes, and Shaktar Donetsk.”

“Coaches Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene will remain integral members of the Club’s new Technical Team.”

Mngqithi, who took over as head coach from Rulani Mokwena at the start of the season, has been a key figure in the Sundowns coaching staff since 2014, previously assisting Pitso Mosimane. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in the club securing nine league championships.

“Mamelodi Sundowns expresses its appreciation for the dedicated service of Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson over the years and wishes them all the best in their future pursuits,” Sundowns remarked.

“Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson will always hold a special place in the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. The club also thanks Romain Folz for his short stay with us.”

“The players will meet the newly appointed Coaches when they return to training on Wednesday.”

Cardoso’s first match in charge will be a crucial CAF Champions League home fixture against Raja Casablanca at Loftus Stadium on Sunday at 15:00.
