WAYNE ROONEY has named Mike Phelan as his new assistant manager at Plymouth.
Pete Shuttleworth has resigned from his role as Rooney’s No. 2 for personal reasons, prompting changes in Argyle’s backroom staff.
Rooney opted to bring Phelan on board, having worked with him during their time at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Rooney commented, “I’m saddened to see Pete leave the club.
“He is someone I’ve closely partnered with throughout my managerial career, starting at Derby County, and he has been a great friend.
“Pete is currently dealing with personal issues that require his focus, and we all respect that choice; therefore, we have mutually decided to part ways.
“Mike is a well-known presence for me, having worked together during my time at Manchester United. He has vast experience from the highest tiers of football.
“I’m excited to welcome him to Argyle and anticipate his immediate contributions.”
Phelan spent five seasons at Manchester United from 2008 to 2012 under Sir Ferguson, securing the Premier League and the Champions League titles.
He later held positions at Norwich and Hull before returning to United in 2018 for another four years.
Phelan is now set to join Rooney at Plymouth, where Rooney has been in charge since May.
Currently, Argyle sits 22nd in the Championship, in the relegation zone solely due to goal difference.
They are on a winless streak of four league matches, despite recording a 2-2 draw against Watford in their most recent game.
