Stellenbosch Suffers Second Loss in CAF Competition

Stellenbosch FC suffered their second consecutive defeat in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, losing 3-1 to last season’s finalists RS Berkane at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

Youssef Zghoudi scored two rapid goals in the first half, capitalizing on Stellenbosch’s defensive errors during set-pieces. The first goal came from a well-executed corner, while the second was a perfectly placed header off a free-kick.

Berkane clinched a third goal in the 83rd minute with a powerful shot from Reda Hajji, who sent the ball past Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens. Chumani Butsana managed to find the net with a late consolation goal for the South African team.

This defeat leaves Stellenbosch still searching for a win in the group stage, having lost both of their initial matches. In contrast, RS Berkane has established a strong position in Group B, accruing six points from two games.

Berkane, an experienced contender in the tournament, won this cup in 2022 against Orlando Pirates before falling to Zamalek the next season. Their seasoned coach, Moïne Chaâbani, previously led Esperance to two consecutive CAF Champions League titles.

In another fixture, Stade Malien and Desportivo Lunda-Sul ended in a 1-1 stalemate, leaving them with four and one point, respectively, in second and third places.
