Mngqithi Remains Optimistic Despite Tough Start in CAF

Mamelodi Sundowns manager Manqoba Mngqithi expressed doubts about FAR’s goal but remains positive about Masandawana’s CAF Champions League journey, despite only earning two points from two matches.

The Brazilians played to a 1-1 draw against AS FAR on Saturday night, marking their second draw in this stage of the Champions League.

In their group stage debut, Downs failed to take advantage of home soil, finishing in a 0-0 draw against Congo DRC’s Maniema.

Despite the challenging start, the South African squad is currently in second place, with all teams having played the same number of matches, while FAR tops the group following their victory over Raja Casablanca.

Exhibiting their characteristic style of play, with strong possession and multiple scoring opportunities, Mngqithi is optimistic about the outcome in the upcoming leg when they host the Moroccans in Pretoria.

“I don’t think it complicates our goals in the group; I believe we played well. Usually, matches like this end in victory, but we didn’t win. Still, it’s a vital point earned away, and we’ll have the chance to host them, which can change everything,” he remarked.

The former Golden Arrows coach also commended his team for their performance under difficult circumstances at the Ben M’hamed El Adbi stadium and acknowledged the contributions of opposing coach Hubert Velud.

“They have the upper hand now, but the two points we’ve secured can completely alter the situation. We are very confident in our skills, and I’m pleased with how we performed. I also praise their coach for his smart adjustments, which demonstrated his understanding of the game early on,” Mngqithi added.

However, the 53-year-old admitted to being skeptical about the validity of FAR’s equalizing goal, claiming that a foul on one of his players took place, unfairly benefiting the opposing attack.

“They are a strong team. We knew (Rabie) Hrimat could be a danger at the far post. Unfortunately, I believe my player was fouled in the AS box, leading to the transition that resulted in their goal. I haven’t analyzed the footage yet, but I’m convinced that Khuliso Mudau was fouled inside the box,” Mngqithi asserted.

Sundowns’ next test in Africa’s top interclub tournament will take them back to Morocco, where they are scheduled to face reigning Botola Pro League champions Raja Casablanca next Sunday.
