Olympic gold medalist Katy Marchant has sustained a broken arm due to a severe crash, which also required medical attention for another rider and several spectators.
Team GB’s shining star for 2024 was launched over the barrier and into the crowd at London’s Lee Valley Velodrome, leading to the event’s cancellation for the UCI Track Champions League.
Eurosport coverage of the live event switched away during the frightening incident.
Medical teams rushed to assist Marchant, her German competitor Alessa-Catriona Propster, and four spectators.
Marchant was taken to a hospital, where it was determined she has a fractured forearm.
The incident transpired when Leeds star collided with Propster during the first round of the keirin.
Both athletes flew into the spectators at the top of the incline.
Marchant lay on the ground for about thirty minutes, while her husband Rob remained by her side throughout.
She was subsequently carried from the velodrome and transported to the hospital.
Reports indicate that Marchant is now in “stable condition.”
Propster, 23, seemed to have escaped with minor injuries, walking away after approximately ten minutes of medical attention.
The four injured spectators also appeared to have only sustained minor injuries and were treated at the site.
Cycling officials later stated that they are investigating the incident to determine what “appropriate action” should be taken.
After some time had passed following the crash, Eurosport returned to the velodrome to deliver an update from trackside reporter Adam Blythe.
The former professional rider from Sheffield assured viewers: “The encouraging news is that the GB rider [Marchant] is doing okay.
“She has suffered a broken forearm but is in stable condition.”
Marchant recently celebrated her gold medal victory with Team GB’s women’s sprint squad in Paris earlier in August.
Earlier in the year, she made headlines by becoming the first British woman to clinch the European title in the 500m time trial.
British Cycling released a statement on Saturday stating: “We can confirm that two riders and four spectators received medical care after an incident during the UCI Track Champions League event at Lee Valley VeloPark in London.
“The incident occurred during the Women’s Keirin race. The event’s medical team acted immediately, and one rider was transported to the hospital.
“WBD Sports, British Cycling, Lee Valley VeloPark, and the Union Cycliste Internationale have jointly decided to suspend all remaining races for the evening, extending their best wishes for a quick recovery to all affected riders and spectators.
“We also want to thank the medical staff for their prompt response and care.
“We are working closely with all parties involved to investigate the incident and will determine appropriate actions. No further statements will be provided at this time.”
