Hong Kong is filled with extraordinary personalities.
One of the most colorful among them is Roshan Melwani, the city’s famous tailor serving numerous celebrities.
He manages the world-famous Sam’s Tailor in the lively Kowloon district, serving an impressive list of clients.
Inside, the walls are lined with photographs of numerous celebrities who have commissioned custom suits.
Celebrities, including US presidents and British royalty, have had their finest outfits crafted here — specifically in the workshops located above the store.
Even ‘Arry Kane has picked up stylish new clothes during his visit to the East.
If you’re using GPS to find Sam’s, you might think it’s off track — but nestled inside a skyscraper, the vibrant neon sign outside, which barely fits a dozen clients, confirms your navigation was right.
Roshan, a prominent figure on social media in Hong Kong, follows in the footsteps of his father Manu — who recently received an MBE — and quickly landed a fitting with a notable client: “My first fitting was with Desmond Tutu.”
When he’s not focused on work or sharing his own-branded beer with patrons, he devotes his passion to horse racing.
He owns a six-year-old named Karma, currently training with the local legend Caspar Fownes.
Karma has garnered a significant following and gave Roshan his best moment when he won the £315,000 140th HKJC Anniversary Cup earlier this year.
He expressed, “We are a very traditional family; I wouldn’t buy a horse without honoring my father’s legacy too.
“When this horse wins, it’s a triumph for my entire family, and he has brought us immense joy.
“Wherever I go, people stop me to chat about Karma. My son has developed a passion for racing, and I hope he’ll own horses someday.
“As the races go on and Karma keeps winning, I’m starting to feel like Rocky Balboa!
“The crowd at the racetrack goes wild; they’ve gone absolutely crazy for Karma!”
Roshan’s exuberant celebrations are almost as famous as his horse.
He confessed to causing a stir with his best John Travolta Saturday Night Fever dance moves in the winners’ circle at Sha Tin.
However, he feels he is winning over the critics. He remarked: “The locals had never seen owners celebrate like I do; most are quite reserved, but that’s not me.
“I went all out, and at first, they didn’t appreciate it. Media comments were saying, ‘This guy is a nutcase. What is he doing?’
“But over time, people started enjoying it. Everyone began saying, ‘We want this guy to dance!’”
I’m all for a bit of Bee Gees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive,’ though I doubt I could match Roshan’s dance moves.
After all, once you step out of Sam’s, it’s certainly a showcase of ZZ Top’s ‘Sharp Dressed Man.’
