Mandla Ncikazi, the assistant coach for Orlando Pirates, recognizes the immense strengths and status of Al Ahly in African football, claiming that the Egyptian powerhouses are the top team on the continent ahead of their upcoming clash.
The Buccaneers are gearing up to face the reigning and record 12-time African champions at a full Orlando Stadium in their second group stage match of the CAF Champions League on Saturday (15h00).
Both teams claimed victories in their opening matches in Group C, with Marcel Koller’s squad securing a 4-2 triumph over Stade d’ Abidjan from Ivory Coast in Cairo, while the Soweto giants achieved an important away win against CR Belouizdad.
Currently, the Red Devils lead Jose Riveiro’s team at the top of the table due to goal difference. Ncikazi admitted that their rivals hold a slight advantage, having consistently competed in this tournament. “We acknowledge the strengths of our opponents, as they are the top team in Africa. They have vast experience, including key players from last season’s tournament and international players from Egypt and Morocco,” Ncikazi remarked.
Though the former Golden Arrows coach remains vigilant of the threats from the visiting team, he expresses confidence that the Pirates are ready to stand firm and deliver a performance that could lead to a positive result. “We understand the challenges we face, but we believe in our squad. This is a new experience for us, and the players are prepared to showcase a performance that all of South Africa can be proud of,” Ncikazi concluded.
Meanwhile, Riveiro anticipates a challenging and fast-paced encounter but emphasizes that playing against the best in Africa will be a valuable learning opportunity for the Sea Robbers, who last participated in the group stages during the 2018/19 season. “This is an opportunity for us to continue learning as a unit, allowing us to grow and mature. The game will be intense, featuring 22 exceptional players on the field,” the Spanish coach commented.
Al Ahly is determined to address their struggles in South Africa and aim for their first win on this terrain, while the Pirates will take inspiration from having won two matches, drawn two, and suffered only one loss in their last five meetings against the North African side.
