Mohamed Salah Deserves the Ballon d’Or: Ranking Just Below Thierry Henry Among Premier League Legends

The word Salah means ‘prayer’ when referring to Islam. When Mo bursts down the flank to take a shot, rival teams might wish to pray — because more often than not, his efforts result in a goal for Liverpool.

This elegantly groomed forward stands as Liverpool’s most threatening attacker, spearheading the efforts for the Premier League leaders.

Things were not always this way. This season, he trimmed his wild hairstyle; however, unlike Samson, he maintained his immense abilities, outmaneuvering defenses with his accurate strikes.

For seven years, his scoring has been a vital asset in Liverpool’s toolkit.

In Wednesday’s encounter with Newcastle, his deadly left-foot accuracy was prominently showcased.

He assisted Curtis Jones for their only goal against two strikes from Newcastle.

By his usual standards, one might regard his overall impact as modest.

Nonetheless, he managed to score twice, each time assisted by substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold, and nearly added another with a shot that struck the crossbar.

The last-minute equalizer from Newcastle for a 3-3 draw cost Liverpool two crucial points atop the table, but Salah made it clear with his 14th league goal of the season that he remains a formidable force.

Notably, he has overtaken Manchester City’s leading scorer, Erling Haaland.

It is an extraordinary feat for a relatively diminutive forward on the right flank. He is undoubtedly an Egyptian magician.

So how does he compare to the greatest football imports in history?

Mo Salah hints at a potential departure from Liverpool just days after saying he was ‘more out than in’

Without question, I’d place Thierry Henry from France and Arsenal at the pinnacle, while Salah shares the second spot with Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

It is astonishing that he has never been ranked higher than fifth in the Ballon d’Or.

Among wingers in England, only Man United’s Ryan Giggs comes anywhere near him.

Since his arrival in 2014 after transferring from Chelsea from Basel, he has scored 170 goals in the Premier League and provided 77 assists.

Following a stint at Roma, Liverpool acquired him in June 2017 for £44.4 million, a then-club record.

What seemed like a steep fee at that time has turned out to be an absolute bargain.

Recently, Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia has been rumored to have made a £150 million offer for him. That’s a staggering amount in any context.

Jurgen Klopp has always considered Salah indispensable, a sentiment echoed by his successor, Arne Slot.

Who else could provide such significant contributions from the right flank in pursuit of the club’s first league title since the 2019-20 season?

It’s an exciting prospect, especially for a portion of the city. With Manchester City struggling to leave their mark and Liverpool holding a seven-point advantage, Salah continues to be Slot’s secret weapon.

The club is understandably cautious to discuss contracts for Salah, Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, given the importance of team unity.

As he approaches 32, Salah must acknowledge that his next move may be his final opportunity to either boost or at least maintain his reported £15 million annual salary.

The devoted father of two daughters has shown a desire to remain at Anfield.

A practicing Muslim and advocate for women’s rights, he has found a sense of community among the welcoming Scousers.

He truly embodies principles and faith. After celebrating with his teammates, he humbly prostrates in the sujud position as an act of gratitude following each goal he scores.

Few would have demonstrated such forgiveness towards a thief as Salah did in Egypt — he offered financial support and job opportunities rather than pursuing charges against the individual who robbed his family.

This trait makes him exceptional, overshadowing the multitude of awards he has received.

He thoroughly deserves every accolade — including the next Ballon d’Or.
