Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel feels that the footballing deities have turned against his squad.
The Bay faced their sixth straight defeat against SuperSport United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday, a match in which they held the advantage for much of the time.
In the 36th minute, they missed a crucial penalty opportunity when Nkosikhona Ndaba’s poorly taken shot was saved by Thakasani Mbanjwa.
Even though Richards Bay dominated, they found themselves behind when veteran striker Bradley Grobler netted a precise first-time shot in the 89th minute, allowing the visitors to grab all three points and relieve some pressure from their coach, Gavin Hunt, whose side had been outclassed.
Gabriel pondered the team’s tough run: “Experience in this game teaches us that there come seasons and moments when the odds simply are not in your favor,” he stated.
“Perhaps later in the season, luck will start to turn in our favor. We need to maintain our faith that the footballing Gods will eventually favor us, allowing us to reverse our fortunes and achieve a victory.
“During challenging times like these, things often don’t play out as we hope. Just consider today’s match – we missed a penalty, controlled the game, but they scored late, leaving us with nothing.
“It’s a disappointing result, but we need to learn from this and find ways to finish our games better as we prepare for the encounter against Golden Arrows.”
Club chairman Sifiso Biyela praised the team’s effort, describing it as their best performance of the season.
SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt echoed Gabriel’s sentiments, admitting his team was fortunate to secure the victory. He highlighted the importance of the three points, which brought some relief to his team.
“It was quite challenging for Bay, but I must commend the playing surface; it was excellent,” Hunt noted.
“There were times when we struggled to play well. For us, tonight was more about securing the result rather than producing a stellar performance.
“Both teams have faced difficulties in winning recently, leading to a certain level of anxiety and mistakes in our play.
“The points were vital for both sides, even more than the quality of our performance. We were lucky with the penalty; when we conceded it, I thought, ‘Here we go again’.
“Ultimately, the key takeaway is the points, which provide a slight uplift and some breathing space. However, this feeling of relief won’t last long as we have another match scheduled for this weekend, just like everyone else.”
