The WORLD CUP champion Bixente Lizarazu has candidly spoken about his battle with bigorexia, stating: “I am a sick man”.
The former French football star achieved significant success with Bayern Munich and has also represented Bordeaux, Athletic Bilbao, and Marseille.
The left-back was instrumental in helping Les Bleus clinch victory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, playing in both finals.
At 54, he has disclosed that he is confronting a rare mental disorder that compels individuals to engage in excessive exercise.
This condition, known as muscle dysmorphia, or bigorexia, causes those affected to feel that their bodies are not muscular enough and appear weak.
People with this disorder often limit themselves to diets they believe will boost their muscle growth.
If left untreated, bigorexia can lead to severe issues, including depression, suicidal ideation, and steroid misuse.
Since his retirement from football 18 years back, Lizarazu has been actively involved in sports like surfing, jiu-jitsu, and cycling.
During a French interview, the 95-cap international remarked: “I am unwell. At 54, I still feel the need to live like a professional athlete.”
“Exercise is my passion, and it has always been beneficial for me.”
“It has shaped my life and helped me maintain balance.”
“Nevertheless, I suffer from bigorexia, which means I often overdo my workouts.”

“Anyone with this disorder who abruptly stops exercising risks falling into depression.
“I have to push myself, exhaust my energy, and let out all the energy inside me.”
“However, this condition is better than other forms of addiction; I just need to learn how to manage it.”
Lizarazu has been in a relationship with actress Claire Keim since 2006.
He noted: “She met me while I was still a footballer, which is lucky as she understands my obsession with the sport.”
“While it’s a healthy pursuit, it does take up a considerable amount of my time.”
Lizarazu earned titles in the Champions League and six Bundesliga championships during his tenure with Bayern.
He also played a significant role in bringing Bordeaux from France‘s second division to winning the Intertoto Cup and reaching the final of the UEFA Cup.
