Fastorslow, the highly regarded chaser, is set to miss the entire season, dampening expectations for an exciting showdown with Galopin Des Champs.
The multiple Grade 1 victor, trained by Martin Brassil, has not suffered a career-ending injury.
Nevertheless, he needs a period of rest to recover after finishing fourth in the John Durkan.
The trainer conveyed in a message shared with Irishracing.com: “After the John Durkan Chase, Fastorslow incurred a soft tissue injury.
“Before resuming full training, we had him evaluated by our veterinary team. They recommended that he take time off, meaning he will miss the remainder of this season.
“This injury is not career threatening, and we expect him to return for the start of the 2025/26 season.”
Fastorslow was seen as a formidable contender for this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.
He and two-time Gold Cup champion Galopin Des Champs have faced off in some thrilling encounters, particularly at Fastorslow’s preferred track, Punchestown.
However, his performance in last month’s John Durkan was below expectations, which was clinched by the current Gold Cup favorite, Fact To File.
Following news of Fastorslow’s situation, his odds for the prestigious race have stabilized at 5-2.
Trainer Willie Mullins has openly voiced his respect for the JP McManus-owned seven-year-old, who triumphed in the Brown Advisory in March.
Interest in Galopin Des Champs has also surged, with his odds now at 3-1 for a potential hat-trick in the upcoming Friday feature.
