The players of MANCHESTER UNITED chose not to wear jackets in support of the LGBTQ+ community after Noussair Mazraoui declined to participate in the initiative.
The squad was scheduled to don an Adidas jacket prior to their Premier League match against Everton at Old Trafford, where Ruben Amorim’s team secured a convincing 4-0 win.
For the past two seasons, Manchester United has worn pride-themed kits during warm-ups and jackets featuring similar designs when entering the pitch as part of the Rainbow Laces campaign.
This initiative aims to encourage Premier League clubs to express their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
However, as reported by The Athletic, the Red Devils chose not to wear the walk-out jackets because Mazraoui, 27, communicated to his teammates that he was unwilling to wear it due to his religious beliefs as a Muslim.
The team collectively decided that none of the players would wear the tracksuit to avoid singling out Mazraoui as the only one refusing the attire.
This decision was reached just hours before their match against the Toffees.
Sources suggest that not all players in the locker room were pleased with this resolution.
Bruno, the captain, wore the rainbow armband as a display of the club’s support for the Rainbow Laces campaign.
Additionally, several first-team players from both the men’s and women’s teams engaged in video content to promote the campaign.
