Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge coach Joseph Makhanya conveyed immense pride in watching two young academy stars, Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng, shine on the illustrious platform of the CAF Champions League last week.
The duo significantly contributed to Pirates’ 2-1 victory against CR Belouizdad in Algeria. Mofokeng assisted both of Nkota’s goals, showcasing their remarkable talent and promise.
Makhanya emphasized the significance of this achievement: “It was a proud moment two weeks ago when Pirates participated in the Champions League, and I witnessed Nkota playing while Rele started the match. Scoring a brace in the Champions League is an accomplishment worth celebrating.”
Another rising star at Pirates is Jabulani Mokone, a talented right-back. However, his chances with the senior team are constrained due to competition from players like Thabiso Monyane, Deano Van Rooyen, and Bandile Shandu.
Makhanya pointed out that Mokone’s height might hinder him when dealing with aerial threats at the top level. He suggested considering a more offensive position for Mokone that would better showcase his strengths:
“One thing I can state is that our journeys are not identical,” Makhanya expressed regarding Mokone, who joined the first team last season with Pirates.
“We are working on some positional changes to determine where he can excel. Currently, he plays as a right-back, but at the highest level, he must not be a liability in defense, particularly against aerial challenges, as opponents will attack from various angles and dimensions at this level.
“Thus, we need to assess and aim to transition him into a more attacking role that reduces his defensive duties that expose him to these aerial risks since other teams may take advantage of these weaknesses.
“We understand that height is a vital concern because if he were positioned further forward, he could perform significantly better.”
Despite these challenges, Makhanya remains optimistic about Mokone’s future and his ability to contribute to the success of Pirates.
“We are coaches dedicated to his growth. From what we can see, whenever he views the game from the back to the front, he plays substantially better,” Makhanya noted.
“However, issues arise during moments of team pressure, which we are mindful of. Nevertheless, in terms of potential, he shows great promise. He also brings joy to our work and represents an exciting opportunity for South African football.”
