AmaZulu co-coach Vusi Vilakazi has revealed that, in contrast to his experiences at Richards Bay, he remains calm at Usuthu, as they prioritize quality football over just chasing results.
AmaZulu secured their second consecutive league victory, defeating rivals Richards Bay 3-1 on Saturday, which lifted them to 13th place in the Betway Premiership standings.
Since the appointment of co-coaches Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane following the departure of Pablo Franco Martin, Usuthu has celebrated two wins in their last three league matches after initially facing three losses.
Prior to his return to Usuthu as the head coach of the reserve team, Kanu was relieved from his duties as the Natal Rich Boys head coach, despite securing a victory in their relegation playoff.
The 42-year-old faced a familiar challenge when he was called to co-coach an Usuthu team struggling at the bottom of the relegation zone. However, the former Golden Arrows coach insists that the two situations are not directly alike, stressing that there is no urgency at AmaZulu.
“We are not in panic mode currently, and we expressed from the onset that we would progressively improve our standing at AmaZulu. I think we have ample time and matches ahead of us, so there’s no panic as there was at Richards Bay, where we had to scrape to get by. Our play wasn’t even enjoyable to watch; we were merely grinding out results,” he stated.
Usuthu’s victory over Bay was fueled by three young players who made meaningful contributions to the team’s overall performance.
24-year-old Tshepang Moremi, alongside 23-year-olds Rowan Human and Ethan Brooks, played crucial roles in all three goals scored, having been selected to start over several more experienced players.
The Usuthu co-coach praised the trio for their impact on the team’s triumph while also offering constructive feedback.
“I believe they have great potential, but I must stress that they still need to fully showcase their abilities. We need to encourage them and foster an environment conducive to their talent,” Vilakazi explained.
While acknowledging the abilities of the Usuthu youngsters, coach Kanu pointed out some areas needing improvement for his young squad, saying, “Regarding ball retention, that’s not something we can coach them on, but we need to enhance our defensive organization. That’s where they lack; however, their ball handling is impressive and they need to raise their game to reach the top.”
The Durban club is looking to have a fully fit squad, blending experience with emerging talent as they gear up to close out the year with three challenging matches.
In their efforts to move away from the relegation zone, Usuthu will take on TS Galaxy away on Sunday, return home to face Royal AM, and finish the year with an away match against Cape Town City in the Western Cape.
