35,016-Seat Premier League Stadium Demolished for Apartment Complex, Leaving Behind Only a Commemorative Statue

The remnants of Upton Park include a residential development, a memorable statue, and more than a century’s worth of treasured experiences.

West Ham honored their heritage at the Boleyn Ground for 102 years before their move in 2016.

After a captivating 3-2 win against Manchester United in May 2016, the Hammers bid a heartfelt farewell to their cherished ground.

Since then, they’ve been competing in Stratford, a few miles away, leaving behind a once-thriving community.

A part of Upton Park was demolished for the 2018 film *Final Score*, featuring Pierce Brosnan and Dave Bautista.

Eventually, it was fully taken down, paving the way for 842 new flats.

SunSport reported last year that the heritage of the site and its local significance is preserved, with the apartment complex incorporating a “bubbles” motif, drawing inspiration from the club’s famed anthem “Forever Blowing Bubbles.”

The Upton Gardens development features a variety of properties, with one-bedroom flats starting at £350,000 and two-bedroom maisonettes available for around £500,000.

The move of West Ham has left a considerable impact on the local area.

Nathan’s Pie and Eels, a beloved matchday spot, closed its doors permanently in 2018, only two years after West Ham’s departure.

Many local establishments have also shut down or faced difficulties in remaining in business.

After relocating to Stratford, West Ham wanted to bring the statue with them.

However, Newham Council decided to support the fans who wished for it to stay.

As reported by The Athletic, a number of devoted West Ham fans still frequent The Boleyn Tavern on match days, located a 40-minute public transport ride from the London Stadium.

In anticipation of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Arsenal, one supporter remarked: “I’d rather spend my money here to support the pub.”

“Think of all the patrons they have lost over the years. West Ham’s move has had a profound effect on the locality.

“When asked, ‘Are West Ham at home this week?’ I reply, ‘No, they’re playing away at Stratford’. There’s no longer a home ground for us.

“The atmosphere at the London Stadium is abysmal. The away fans dominate us every matchday.”

Since leaving Upton Park, West Ham has celebrated notable achievements, including winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Nonetheless, many fans still express a disconnect with their current stadium.

Ultimately, a substantial part of the club’s heritage will always remain in E13, overshadowed now by 842 flats that occupy the storied ground.
