Stormers Face Challenge as Kitshoff’s Injury Raises Concerns

Concerns Expressed by DHL Stormers Director John Dobson Regarding Steven Kitshoff’s Future After Surgery

Steven Kitshoff, who recently made his return to the Stormers from Ulster, suffered a serious neck injury during the Currie Cup match versus Griquas in September. After undergoing a complex neck fusion surgery, the long-term ramifications of his injury remain uncertain.

In a statement to Sportswire following their loss to the Sharks in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, Dobson stated, “There has been some misinformation. The C1, C2 fusion is one of the most complex types of neck fusions.”

“It’s crucial to realize that the recovery will hinge on the success of the neck fusion. The procedure has just taken place. A neck fusion would only be necessary if there were a possibility it could allow him to return to playing.”

“At this point, we must wait and see if the surgery achieved its purpose. The site of the fusion is troubling as it’s situated very high at C1 and C2. Under the current circumstances, we must follow the protocols; we truly remain uncertain at this juncture.”

Dobson emphasized the importance of this surgery in addressing Kitshoff’s condition to potentially allow him to continue his rugby career. However, the recovery process is anticipated to be both lengthy and challenging.

“He underwent a fusion for a definite purpose; he could have chosen not to play at all if he had pursued another surgical option. We need to assess the outcomes of the surgery and what his future condition will be,” he mentioned.

The Stormers are presently dealing with various injury challenges, including utility back Damian Willemse, who fractured his finger earlier this season.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus had initially named him for the upcoming Autumn Nations Series tour this October, but he had to withdraw due to a groin injury, which opened the door for Cameron Hanekom’s debut call-up to the national squad.

Moreover, the Stormers are missing players such as Frans Malherbe, Salmaan Moerat, and Evan Roos. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu sustained a concussion during the match against the Sharks, failing the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) and was subsequently ruled out.

Manie Libbok stepped in for him. The likelihood of Feinberg-Mngomezulu participating in the Stormers’ upcoming European Cup – The Investec Cup – match against French giants Toulon at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this weekend appears minimal.
