Mngqithi Commends Rayner’s Versatility at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi shares his enthusiastic feedback on Iqraam Rayners’ revival at the Tshwane club.

The Bafana Bafana striker joined the Brazilians at the beginning of this season from Stellenbosch, where he participated in just one match against TS Galaxy in the MTN 8.

Since his transfer to Sundowns, who triggered his release clause, the former Stellenbosch forward has scored eight goals across various competitions. Mngqithi has expressed satisfaction with Rayners’ adjustment to Sundowns. “Everyone is pleased with how he [Rayners] has regained his form at Sundowns,” Mngqithi remarked.

“From the onset of the season, he has been impressive. We are delighted with how seamlessly he has blended into the team and made a positive impact.

“I wouldn’t say I’m surprised by his success, as we brought him in knowing that he is currently one of the country’s top goal scorers.

“Although he may be lacking in some attributes typically expected of a forward, his goal-scoring ability is exceptional, and I have always believed in his potential.

“For a long time, I’ve felt he was deserving of a spot in a top team. I am confident he will have a significant influence in the Champions League, and I am looking forward to it.”

Rayners was on the score sheet last Saturday when they secured a 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, which currently places them at the summit of the Betway Premiership. He also scored in the recent Carling Knockout final, although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Magesi FC.

On a different note, Namibian striker Peter Shalulile is only a few goals away from becoming the PSL’s all-time leading scorer, a title currently held by Siyabonga Nomvethe with 123 goals. Mngqithi is optimistic that Shalulile can break this record this season, a feat that would be significant for the Sundowns family.

“We share a common goal regarding his pursuit of this milestone,” Mngqithi added.

“He has encountered some challenges with his form. It’s our responsibility to encourage him to find his scoring touch, and fortunately, he has started to find the net again. We hope to manage his fitness efficiently as our schedule gets busier, as that is vital.

“One of the primary issues has been recurring injuries. It’s been hard for him to stay on the pitch since he is a crucial player. Now we have the chance to rejuvenate him and reignite his desire, which gives us an advantage.

“He has been a key asset for this club over the past three seasons, and this season will be no exception. Although we’ve played only eight matches thus far, it will be interesting to see where he stands by season’s end.”

“The goal tally I expect from him seems achievable, and it would be fantastic for the club and everyone involved if he could reach that.”

The last time Shalulile scored was during the quarterfinal of the Carling Knockout against the Chiefs at FNB Stadium earlier last month.
