Awkward Moment: New BBC MOTD Star Ruffles David Moyes with Live Comment, Eliciting a Stoic Response

MARK CHAPMAN found himself in an uncomfortable position during a conversation with David Moyes on Match of the Day 2.

The 51-year-old Chapman made a lighthearted but unintended remark about David Moyes‘s successes in Europe with West Ham.

Moyes joined Chapman and Alan Shearer on the BBC highlight show to discuss the weekend’s matches.

While recapping Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, Chapman pointed out how Chelsea could adjust their lineup due to their involvement in the UEFA Conference League, as opposed to competing in the Champions League or Europa League.

Seemingly implying that the weaker teams in the Conference League allow Chelsea to rotate their players substantially, Chapman remarked: “If you look at the changes that he [Enzo Maresca] can make in Europe.”

“And look they’re in the Conference League so they can…”

Before he could continue, Moyes playfully interjected: “What’s wrong with the Conference League?”

This witty reply made both Chapman and Shearer laugh, as Moyes referenced his notable win in the Conference League with West Ham.

Chapman humorously noted: “That was a bit awkward!”

Moyes guided West Ham to victory in the Conference League in 2023, defeating Fiorentina in the final in Prague, marking the first occasion an English club claimed the relatively new trophy.

This victory marked West Ham’s first major trophy in 43 years and was the highlight of Moyes’ illustrious managerial journey.

Fans appreciated Moyes’ lighthearted reaction to Chapman’s uncomfortable moment.

On social media, one viewer remarked: “Great moment!”

Another added: “Moyes’ laughter and deadpan expression were fantastic.”

Chapman is a strong candidate to succeed Gary Lineker as the host of Match of the Day at the end of this season.

Lineker is set to depart after more than 25 years in the position.

Having hosted MOTD2 since 2013, Chapman is highly regarded to take over at the BBC.

However, last month The Sun reported that the BBC intends to split hosting responsibilities between two presenters—a plan Chapman does not support.

In fact, Chapman has outrightly rejected any job-sharing arrangement for Match of the Day.
