Major Broadcasting Change: Formula E Returns to Free-to-Air Television with a New Hosting Team

FORMULA E has announced a major change in its broadcasting setup, marking a return to free-to-air television.

The motorsport series previously aired on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5, but has recently shifted behind a paywall, making its debut on TNT Sports for the first time in its ten-year history.

It has now been confirmed that the series will return to ITV for the 2024/25 season, providing live broadcasts and highlights on the ITVX app and ITV4.

This includes the Season 11 opener in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on December 7.

Formula E‘s chief media officer, Aarti Dabas, expressed: “We’re thrilled to enhance access to our exciting championship for fans in the UK and Ireland through our valued media partners – TNT Sport and now ITV – offering various ways to connect with the sport.

“With our new highlights show after each race weekend on ITV, viewers will receive exclusive content straight from the paddock, enhancing the experience for both newcomers and loyal fans.

“We aim to deliver even more on-track excitement and grow the sport’s fanbase.”

The channel change will also introduce a revamped presenting team, with former BBC personality Jermaine Jenas stepping away from the all-electric racing series.

Innovative presenter Nicki Shields is set to return, becoming the first female lead in the series’ history.

Since her debut in 2014, she has been a prominent figure on and off the track, notably being the first female lead commentator for the F1 Academy during its 2024 launch.

Discussing her new role, Shields commented: “I vividly remember my first Formula E race in Beijing back in 2014, and my enthusiasm for this sport hasn’t waned after ten years.

“I’m eager to return to Formula E as the lead presenter for Season 11. It’s a privilege to share the excitement and energy of this remarkable sport with fans around the world.

“With our talented presenting team, we’re committed to bringing audiences closer to the action than ever before. Bring on São Paulo!”

She will be joined by racing drivers Billy Monger and Catie Munnings, along with sports commentator Tom Brooks.

Pundits throughout the season will include David Coulthard, Karun Chandhok, Andre Lotterer, James Rossiter, and Alan McNish.

Saunders Carmichael-Brown and Alexa Rendell will also return as pitlane reporters.

Formula E’s CEO Jeff Dodds acknowledged before the London season finale that placing the racing series behind a paywall had resulted in “viewership numbers that have fallen short of expectations.”

Pascal Wehrlein was crowned champion last season, narrowly defeating Mitch Evans by just six points.
