GARY LINEKER has revealed the unexpected announcement that he is EXITING Match of the Day.
The popular host, 63, began his journey with the flagship BBC program in 1999, succeeding Des Lynam.
After more than 25 years leading the show, he has chosen to leave his MOTD position.
As part of a major revamp, the BBC is considering the possibility of rotating presenters each week.
With Lineker stepping down, new talents will be needed to step into his significant role. But who could they be?
MARK CHAPMAN
Chapman, 51, is currently the frontrunner to take over as MOTD presenter.
He hosts MOTD2 on Sunday evenings and has also landed a role for the upcoming BBC Champions League highlights program.
ALEX SCOTT
Scott is frequently chosen by BBC executives when Lineker is unavailable.
The former right-back, 40, has experience hosting the Saturday night show and covering live matches, providing the unique viewpoint of a former England international.
GABBY LOGAN
Like Scott, Logan, 51, is a primary substitute for when Lineker is off-air.
Since joining the BBC in 2007, she has taken on various roles, including Olympics coverage, Sports Personality of the Year, and Final Score.
MICAH RICHARDS
Among Lineker’s top choices to succeed him is the dynamic former Man City defender Richards.
The outgoing host told his close friend, 36, on their Stick to Football podcast: “I’d love to see you take over Micah, I think you’d be brilliant in the chair.”
JASON MOHAMMAD
Mohammad could see a “promotion” from Final Score to Match of the Day.
The 51-year-old Welsh broadcaster, who took over from Logan in 2013, is already one of the BBC’s highest earners and has more experience than fellow Final Score and BBC Sport presenter Kelly Somers, who might become the main live host for the afternoon show.
JEFF STELLING
Could he really make the leap? While Lineker has been the prominent face of Saturday night football television for years, Stelling has been the go-to figure for afternoon shows as Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday presenter.
He would bring a wealth of charisma, humor, and legendary broadcasting expertise – but at nearly 70 and currently with talkSPORT, the Hartlepool fan may not be the most budget-friendly or long-term choice.
